Postage Stamp Collecting - Where to Start?
Whether you've known someone who has been involved in postage stamp collecting or the thought of gathering timeless pieces of history interests you, there is always a room for another collector on the block.
I started collecting stamps as a kid in an old cigar box my grandpa gave me, and many of them were hand me downs from my grandmother. I didn't think much of it at the time, but now I have pristine stamps in my collection from over 60 years ago. I'm sure that you notice we don't use postage stamps as nearly as much as we used to even ten years ago, but don't be afraid.
The designs and creative art that are used in making stamps today is incredible, and even though I appreciate the old fashioned pieces, this is great for new collectors. Many of the new stamps available are very impressive, and although they can be harder to find, make a great addition to anyone's collection. Postage stamp collecting can be something you do on your own or with your friends and family but there are few things you will want to get started.
If you are serious about postage stamp collecting you will want to get an album to keep all of your stamps neatly organized and protected. The next thing your will want to keep on hand is a magnifying glass. This will allow you to see any imperfections on your stamps that may not be visible to the naked eye. It may not sound like a big deal now, but if you get serious about postage stamp collecting you will want to ensure each of your trades or purchases are for good quality stamps.
So it doesn't take a lot of money to get started, and the two biggest investments will be your album and magnifying glass which aren't much. There are many styles, colors, and sizes available so shop until you drop!
